Readings for March 16th

I have assigned two readings for the following week(s). Andre Bazin’s Bicycle Thief and Millicent Marcus´s De Sica’s Bicycle Thief: Casting Shadows on the visionary city.

For Bazin’s text I would like you to write down 10 key points the author discusses and a set of 5 questions. These questions can either address issues that are left unresolved or questions that provide answers that can help us understand the author´s intentions.

Based onCasting Shadows on the visionary city, please answer the following questions.

  1. According to Marcus, how can “historical circumstances” dictate a “technical style”?
  2. What do you think Millicent Marcus means by “deceptive simplicity” when referring to De Sica´s and Zavattini´s Bicycle Thief?
  3. Is there a moment in BT where we can sense a criticism to Hollywood films?
  4. In your own words, please explain what the dent in the bicycle symbolizes.
  5. How does the film mediate the relationship between father and son, the individual and the city, and the individual and the social institutions?
  6. What do you think the author means by titling his chapter “Casting Shadows on a Visionary City”?
