Welcome to “Film Genre”. Readings for next class can be found at the Moodle site for this course. (If you can´t access Moodle try this link).
Your homework for next class is as follows:
1. Please read all three texts assigned for next week:
• Chapter 4 (David Bordwell & Kristin Thompson): Film Genres (pg 93-100 & 105-108)
• Introduction (pg. 1-17) to Steven Cohan’s, Hollywood Musicals, The Film Reader.
• Richard Dyer, Entertainment and Utopia. (pg 17-30)
2. Write a structured synopsis for Bordwell and Thompson’s (Film Genres) text as well as one for Richard Dyer’s (Entertainment and Utopia) text. I know this can be difficult since it’s your first synopsis; just try your best and we can go over them in class. (**Joseph & Cesar, you must hand in a synopsis for Bordwell and Thompson’s. Since you are presenting Dyer’s you are exempt from writing a structured synopsis of the text).
3. Write a short piece on the movie we watched in class (Singin´ in the Rain). Use teven Cohan’s Introduction as a guideline. Try to address the peculiar aspects of the film, for example; how the narrative unfolds, the relationship between the dancing and singing scenes with the story, the characters, the plot, etc.
HW1 (FG), HW2 (RD), HW3 (SR)
