Nombre: Russia and ALBA: a Marriage by Convenience?
Investigador principal: Vladimir Rouvinski
Resumen:
This proposed interdisciplinary research/book project will be led by the Interdisciplinary Research Group (IRG) on "Ill-Liberal Democracies and Democratic Transitions in Latin America". Our IRG and its proposed ALBA study is jointly sponsored by The Center for Latin American Studies (CLAS) and the Department of International Studies (INS) at the University of Miami (UM) in Coral Gables, FL and by the Latin American and Caribbean Center (LACC) at Florida International University (FIU) in Miami, FL.
The purpose of this proposed study is to seek answers to these questions regarding the present and future of the ALBA: its current structure and dynamics, its practicality, its medium and long-term sustainability and its capacity to influence regional and international affairs. Our interest in carrying out this collective research effort derives not only from ALBA’s current “fashionable” status in some sectors of Latin America and the Caribbean, but also from its domestic economic and political processes within member states and its potential impacts on the regional and international policies (both economic and geopolitical) of members countries. We are also interested in ALBA’s possible economic and security consequences for neighboring non-member states in the region and for the role of the United States and of the extra-hemispheric powers in the Western hemisphere. This project will analyze in-depth the origins, ideological orientation, structure, internal dynamics and evolution of the ALBA initiative and its regional and international implications during its first decade of existence.
Our approach will be analytic, critical and interdisciplinary. We intend to bring together a group of 31 well known scholars and policy experts drawn from UM and FIU as well as from other academic institutions throughout the hemisphere. We will hold an initial closed workshop at UM to review and critique individual draft contributions by the project participants and probably public presentation of our edited volume.
Nota: este proyecto hace parte de los esfuerzos de varias universidades de las Américas: “THE ECONOMIC, POLITICAL AND FOREGIN POLICY IMPLICATIONS OF ALBA: AN INTERDISCIPLINARY STUDY OF ALBA INICIATIVE” liderado por la Universidad de Miami; con el fin de armar un libro sobre el tópico finalizando el año
