New completely updated study plan

Concentrated Studies in the Development of Software by Components, Network Services and Information Technology.

Presentation

"To reach a level of economically sustainable global development requires technology and leadership. These will be the recurring themes in this new century".

Jackob Nuesch, President of the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, Zurich.

The mission of this specialization program in Organization Information Management is to train managers of today´s information technology converting them into leaders of the change process in whatever organization they find themselves. These leadership skills will permit them to confront the challenges with which they will be faced under the new economic circumstances of today.

Technology will play a major role in meeting the growing changes that are on the horizon, but technology alone will not be enough to obtain the positive results we want without visionary leadership.

What will be required in this new century will be not only a thorough knowledge of information technology to open frontiers and build the new economy, but also management skills and leadership capacity within organizations to conduct the change process.

With this premise in mind, we have completely updated this specialization program with three fundamental and complementary components.

  • The Management Component. The manager of information technology must thoroughly understand the challenges facing the top management of the company so that he can share with them his own mission and help them realize the full potential that the new information technology offers. This component includes such things as:
  • Project Management, Financial Analysis, Marketing, Logistics, E- Commerce and Management Information Systems.
  • The Leadership Component. To understand and lead change in organizations based on state of the art technologies. This should be a fundamental component for a professional in the field of Technology Management. This component covers the following areas:
  • The Economic Environment, Planning by Scenarios, Leadership, Managing Change and Managing People.

  • The Technology Component. The purpose of this component is to make participants fully aware of the information technology of today which is transforming economies and shaking up organizations. This component is made up of a group of courses, some required and some elective, concentrated in three areas:
  • Information Technology: Network Applications, Introduction to Software Engineering, New Information Technologies.
  • Networks and Communications: Shared Systems, AdvancedTransmission and Switching of Data, Security and Network Planning.
  • Software Development by Components: Object Oriented Programming, Development by Components, Web Applications.

Candidate Profile

Specialization in Organization Information Management is directed to professionals in the technical areas of engineering or from other disciplines with experience in the field of information technology whose objectives in the short and mid term are to assume positions of planning, directing or managing the company’s information technology projects.

Background

The spiraling development of information technology can benefit organizations in obtaining competitive advantages. In the words of Arnoldo Hax: "Any company can use information technology to create protective barriers to drastically affect the competitive situation in a given segment of the market, to upset the balance of power in relations with suppliers, or to create new products. In order to achieve these competitive advantages, organizations will have to establish systemic processes to create an information system that is in accord with their objectives and organizational structure. These organizations will have to apply solid engineering principles to carry out Planning, Create Models, Design, Implement, Test and Maintain the Organization´s Information System".

Participants

As of this date, we have turned out more than 80 students in 5 graduating classes. Their work and professional experience in their respective companies has reaffirmed to us that this course provides the training and tools necessary to convert the participants into agents of change within their organizations. This is further confirmed by Dr. Miller Ortiz, Systems Manager of S.O.S., one of our first graduates:

"The program of Specialization in Organization Information Management gave me the tools to effectively manage the information technology area in my company. Thanks to the strategic focus which was maintained throughout the course, I have been able to direct human resources and information technology toward the achievement of competitive advantages that have been a great help to the company. We have aligned the strategies of the company with the strategies of Information technology. Putting into practice the methodologies, software engineering techniques, communications networks and project management skills learned in this course, one can be a true specialist and obtain exciting results.

The case methodology used in this course familiarized me with international organizational models and considerably broadened my frame of reference.

The perfect balance between the technical and administrative sides given in this course has allowed me to perform competitively in an environment which is increasingly more demanding and has resulted in my reaching a higher position in the company".
