Our program is different
The growing interest in the Environment over the past few years has manifested itself from a number of different points of view: the legal, the educational, the ecological/natural resources and the eminently business point of view. The Icesi University Specialization Program in Managing the Environment focuses on the relation between companies and the environment. Without ignoring other important areas, the program concentrates on those aspects which affect companies, their strategies and their functionality.
Background/Philosophy
Protection of the environment by business enterprises is an activity that demands an ever increasing degree of managerial involvement to insure that the impact of the transformation of goods and services on the environment is neutral or even positive. A company´s competitiveness will depend on how clearly and seriously they handle this principle. Today it is very clear that to achieve competitive advantages (through increased know-how) will depend on developing company research efforts around goods that have a low impact on the environment, (example, using environment friendly design techniques) or research efforts which will help the company develop such goods, (example, eco-tourism). Comparative advantage (based on exploiting natural resources), considered obsolete in the 90´s, is clearly a determining factor today in sustaining an economy. Tapping these natural resources should be reasonable and sustainable, based on principles of equity.
Some factors that threaten companies which are unprepared to deal with them are as follows:
· Environmental Legislation (national, regional and local).
· Global climatic phenomena.
· Community reaction to polluting companies.
· Restrictions on the use of natural resources.
· The use of toxic substances as raw materials or supplies.
· Sustainability as a factor in the development of new businesses.
· Systems of environmental certification.
· The global economic atmosphere regarding environmental restrictions.
The above factors force companies to consider the environment as one of the prime factors in their strategy and requires leaders who are able to manage for sustainable growth.
