Readings for March 9th

Next class (March 2nd) we are going to watch a movie. I have assigned two readings for the following class (March 9th). You may begin reading them and do the following homework to hand in that day.

De Sica´s Bicycle Thief: Casting Shadows on the visionary city.

  1. According to Marcus, how can “historical circumstances” dictate a “technical style”?
  2. What do you think Millicent Marcus means by “deceptive simplicity” when referring to De Sica´s and Zavattini´s Bicycle Thief?
  3. Is there a moment in BT where we can sense a criticism to Hollywood films?
  4. In your own words, please explain what the dent in the bicycle symbolizes.
  5. How does the film mediate the relationship between father and son, the individual and the city, and the individual and the social institutions?
  6. What do you think the author means by titling his chapter “Casting Shadows on a Visionary City”?

 Andre Bazin: Bicycle Thief.

Please write down 10 key points the author discusses in his text.
