Our Focus

The collective understanding of our past, transformation of our present, and, building a more peaceful, democratic and sustainable social future all depend on the social science training that children receive, in our country. Taking on this challenge, ICESI University forms professionals in Social Sciences with skills to teach the relationships of human beings with history and cultures, spatial and environmental relationships, and ethico-political relationships that explain the reality of our time. In this way, our graduates are competent to create new generations that will responsibly take on their participation in history and in the relationships with others and with their environment.

Institutional Accreditation

In 2015, the Ministry of National Education extended ICESI University the High-Quality Institutional Accreditation until 2021. This, in recognition to the University´s ongoing commitment in maintaining high standards of quality in the development of the functions of training, research and social outreach, as well as, administrative support work within the region and the country.

Candidate Profile

The student aiming to become a graduate of Bachelor in Social Sciences at ICESI should be interested in educator training for core middle and high school education level; have team-work skills to work with a racially, and socioeconomically, diverse group of students regardless of gender.

Also, the aspiring student should have the communicative skills required to develop effective listening and communication skills, and show interest in social sciences and research, as well as, critical inquiry of physical, social, and cultural interactions that arise from specific contexts.

Graduate Profile

The graduate of Bachelor in Social Sciences will be able to teach the relationships human beings establish with history and cultures, space and the environment, the world of politics and the economy. The graduate will design learning experiences directed in a way that students understand, analyze, sustain and argue, critical and ethical judgements related to:

  • Space and time as systems of relationships that allow subjects to reflect on their physical and social surroundings.
  • The ways in which relationships of power constitute social phenomena through historical arguments and exchanges around the material, institutional, and symbolic organization of social life.
  • Diversity as a fundamental condition for constituting national, social, and individual identities.
  • The challenges posed on the subject today by sustainable development and the relationship with the material means of existence.
  • The social practices that thread people’s daily lives.
