Why study a Master’s Degree in Education with an Emphasis in ICT

Being competent in the 21st century implies understanding complex environments, impacted by new technologies, social migrations, international competitiveness and environmental and political challenges, all of them as part of the globalization in which we live. This makes the task of teaching even more challenging, since in classrooms we find a generation of students with sociocultural habits that are typical of times of uncertainty. Teachers need to prepare to teach in this context.

Why study our Master’s Degree at ICESI?

ICESI University and the Eduteka Centre of the School of Education Sciences, seeking to respond to the training and learning needs of 21st century citizens, presents their Master’s Degree in Education with an Emphasis in ICT to the Spanish-speaking academic and professional community. According to Cynthia Luna, “Preparing students for work, citizenship and life in the 21st century constitutes an enormous challenge. Globalization, new technologies, migrations, international competition, the evolution of markets and transnational environmental and political challenges are all factors that govern the acquisition of the skills and knowledge that students need to survive and succeed in the 21st century. Educators, ministries of education and governments, foundations, employers and researchers refer to these skills as competences of the twentieth century.” (Luna Scott, 2015)

Consequently, a group of experts from the university and the Eduteka Centre worked on a proposal that solidly integrates the fundamentals of education, 21st century competencies, technology and reflective classroom practices. This generated a training program for teachers in Latin America, which responds to the needs of this century.

The master's degree is aimed at practicing teachers of all disciplines and levels of education who wish to transform their teaching practices with resources, activities and knowledge that allow them to have innovative and motivating classes. The candidates will obtain a high level of understanding about the importance of integrating 21st century competencies and ICT for coping better in today's society.

Objective

To train teachers who are able to design and implement, in a critical, ethical and reflective way, creative, flexible and relevant learning environments enriched with ICT, to promote the development of 21st century competencies in students. They will be teachers able to learn autonomously to update their disciplinary, technological, pedagogical and didactic knowledge.

Main differentiators against other similar master's programs

  • Emphasis on the transformation of teaching practices through learning based on real experiences and on continuous reflection about their impact on the educational context.
  • Continuous accompaniment of the participating teachers and fostering of collaborative work to achieve the learning objectives.
  • Design and implementation of innovative learning environments with the effective and intentional integration of ICT and the development of 21st century skills for the transformation of teaching practices.
  • Flexible academic structure: participants can opt for a Master's title by configuring their route of courses to take. In addition, those who do not aspire to a Master's title can take courses of their interest to gain further knowledge about the educational use of ICT.
  • Support of the Eduteka Centre and its Eduteka educational platform with extensive experience in promoting and implementing the integration of ICT and the development of 21st century competences in learning environments.
  • The assessment of learning is done through a formative process in which the development of the competences of each student is verified through the different tasks and practical exercises.

 

Support of the Eduteka Centre

Eduteka's mission is "to contribute to improving education through the intentional, focused and effective use of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) in learning processes, to contribute to a more prosperous and equitable society." As a result, it offers the following services:

  1. The Eduteka educational platform - www.eduteka.org - is a portal specialized in promoting the educational use of ICT and the development of 21st century competences in the Spanish-speaking community of teachers and directors. It commenced with publications in June 2001 and has become one of the largest educator communities in Latin America. Eduteka makes available to its user community for free, a great deal of educational and informative content, tools and resources that help them enrich their learning environments with the use of ICT.

The platform has received awards from:

  • IADB (Inter-American Development Bank) - Year 2016 - for being an innovative cloud education solution, within the 50 innovations in education in Latin America in 2016 (http://eduteka.icesi.edu.co/pdfdir /bid-50-innovaciones.pdf
  • IADB - Year 2014 - one of the 10 massive and inspiring educational innovations in Latin America, based on six criteria: innovation, inspiration, scale, non-governmental, use of ICT and aimed at basic education.
  • Ministry of National Education, Colombia - Year 2010 -, “Simón Bolívar” Medal in the “Silver Cross” category.
  • RIBIE (Red Iberoamericana de Informática Educativa) - Year 2008 and 2004 - "Colombian Prize for Educational Informatics" awarded by "RIBIE Col" in the category "Production of Digital Educational Resources".

Teacher Training

Eduteka has more than 15 years of experience in training and intervention processes in educational institutions with training for teachers and directors in the pedagogical use of ICT and the development of 21st century skills.

The Academic Event - Edukatic

Edukatic is an annual meeting of teachers, directors, and representatives of the academic community, specialized in promoting and strengthening knowledge and skills in the effective use of ICT in teaching-learning processes. It is divided into sections of academic and practical activities. During the event, the “Eduteka Prize for the Use of ICT in the Classroom” is presented, which aims to recognize and disseminate the best class projects of Latin American teachers of basic and secondary education (K-12), which integrate ICT in educational processes.
