The issues of Mental Health in Colombia have epidemic characteristics with 40% life prevalence. The needs for Mental Health care in Colombia largely surpass specialized Doctor and professional availability in Psychiatry, both in the institutional and private areas. The epidemiological profile of the Colombian population has made it necessary for Mental Health to be added to primary health policies.

Psychiatry is a discipline which systematically integrates the various biopsychosocial components that constitute human reality. It generates permanent challenges not only in clinical aspects, but also through its conceptualization  founded in biological, psychological, and social aspects of individuals. It is a field comprising multiple levels that interrelate and are in permanent development, innovation, advancement and discussion.

The aspiring medical professional to the specialization in psychiatry at University Icesi should have a comprehensive attitude: capable of reflection; critically take on scientific and technological knowledge; sensitive to social media; intellectually and ethically strong; able to execute, create, innovate, and at the same time critically and actively participate in the social changes of the country and especially in those of  health institutions.

Graduate profile

The current condition of the School of Health Sciences at University Icesi and its agreement for assisted educational work with the Fundación Valle del Lili foundation in Cali, meets all the location, administrative, legal, technical, technological, conceptual, academic, and curricular requirements to forge in the students ownership, handling, application and transfer of knowledge. It is built to strengthen scientific community training, academic perfection, social projection with emphasis to face issues that plague our communities; the graduate professional will rely on sufficient skill to perform with quality and excellence, with technological knowledge of information and communication, with a trend toward internationalization and sufficient pertinence to contribute to the social development of our country.

Institutional Accreditation

In the Resolution, the Ministry states: "It has been shown that Universidad Icesi has achieved sufficient quality levels so that, in accordance with the norms that govern the matter, this fact is publicly recognized through a formal act of institutional accreditation". We are the first private university in southwestern Colombia to obtain the highest recognition of quality provided by the Colombian Government. This is a recognition of the quality of the academic programs, their operation and the fulfillment of the social function of the university. Universidad Icesi was accredited in May 2010 by the Ministry of Education through the National Accreditation Committee (CNA), making it the first accredited private university in Cali and the region. In the Resolution, the Ministry states: "It has been demonstrated that Universidad Icesi has achieved sufficient quality levels so that, in accordance with the rules that govern the matter, this fact is publicly recognized through a formal act of institutional accreditation".

Icesi and the Fundación Valle del Lili

The Fundación Valle del Lili and Universidad Icesi have become allies through an agreement that has been called: a deep alliance for life. With this agreement the region is strengthened by the union of two well reputed institutions, which will now work together for the well-being and the health of people and for maintaining a leadership position thanks to their constant advances in the academic, social, humanistic and scientific fields. The Fundación Valle del Lili is the university hospital with the best conditions, both in terms of infrastructure, human resources and technology, and it will provide clinical training and medical practice to future students. This alliance allows both institutions to establish a synergy in all their activities, through coordination for work, preservation of excellence in performance, already widely recognized in both institutions, and consolidates the social projection of both institutions in one of the most important sectors for the community - health. For both institutions this agreement is a strategic step. Scholarship support to resident doctors is an internal process of the Fundación Valle del Lili, whose process will be informed in a timely manner to those who are admitted.

Duration and Methodology

Objective

To train highly qualified specialists in psychiatry with the highest human, ethical, and scientific qualities. Pursuant to the pedagogical model at University Ices and with the Fundación Valle del Lili foundation, the Specialization in Psychiatry program aims to train independent specialists, capable of learning on their own, of analyzing and synthesizing, with critical thinking and that are also able to formulate and develop research projects.

Methodology

The program for specializations in psychiatry incorporates solid organizational forms for academic and practical activities, such as: lectures, outpatient clinic (patient care), inpatient (patient care), therapeutic groups, psychoeducational groups, clinical case discussions, liaison psychiatry interconsultation care, planning and organizing  community activities, service journals (professor-assisted), mortality and complication meetings, clinical cases, journal clubs, supervised practices, research project reviews and follow-ups, ethics committee, clinical history committee, epidemiologic committee, conferences, optional insight credits and seminars. All of these activities link action and engagement for residents and guarantee quality in their training.

The program comprises a theoretical and practical component, the theoretical component will be developed with a self-directed active learning methodology based on problems in which the resident prepare topics ahead of time and discuss the cases assessed in different areas of practice; similarly, questions will be reviewed during seminars and there will be discussions on lectures that had taken place as well as the cases that were presented.

The practical component comprises the handling patient interview activities, psychopathological evaluations, biopsychosocial analyses, therapeutic as well as pharmacotherapeutic and psychotherapeutic proposals, and preventive and promotional interventions.

Duration

This is a 3 year  program duration program, exclusive focus, and full time, with an average of 8 daily hours activity, with rotations of an approximate duration of 3 to 4 months. One weekly clinical case is completed and presented by residents along with a training activity such as topic review, journal clubs, ethical considerations in mental health, and insight in prevention and promotion aspects. Three weekly theory classes are held as average . All activities are related to the practical component linked to each of the rotational sites.

University Icesi confers the degree of Specialist in Psychiatry to  whoever satisfactorily complete all the program requirements.
