Why do a Master of Law - Research at Universidad Icesi?

The key to research creation is that professionals use, mold and rethink methods and practices to reformulate old and new theoretical disputes, from a critical perspective. The program is an academic space for the training of professionals dedicated to the production of knowledge, which strives for continuous progress in their intellectual, technical and scientific development. With a multidisciplinary approach, the Master of Law - Research combines methodologies of Law with quantitative and qualitative methods from the social sciences. This approach ensures a much richer learning. To achieve these aims, the program relies on professors of high academic quality, most of whom have completed their doctoral studies, capable of guiding and directing high-impact research.

Why a Master of Law - Research?

Because we need to produce new knowledge and renew traditional legal thinking in different areas of law to match our social realities. Because we need to foster legal research in the region and contribute to the effective solution of local, regional and national problems.

Purpose

The Master of Law - Research aims to provide a high quality academic training space in the field of legal research and to strengthen research in the field of Law in the southwestern region of the country.

Who is this program for?

Lawyers and other professionals with academic or research experience in the legal field who are interested in building or strengthening their skills and competences in the field of legal research.

Competences

The students that complete this degree will be able to: • Formulate, lead, and conduct research projects that have the law and its relationship to other disciplines as epistemological reference. • Appropriately raise and solve legal quandaries, integrating constitutional and comparative law, among other areas of the law, and elements of other disciplines. • Produce logical and well-written texts based on relevant legal and ethical theories.

Curriculum

The curriculum is built around four foundations designed to meet the program goals and reinforce training skills. These foundations are:

  1. Courses aimed at identifying and understanding the perspectives of analysis in legal research.
  2. Courses aimed at interpreting the complexity of social and political settings.
  3. Courses aimed at the formulation and execution of research proposals, from an appropriate methodological perspective.
  4. Elective subjects.

 

The subjects in the line of theoretical training seek to give an overview of the general legal theory and to form reflective habits in students.

The subjects of contextualization and interdisciplinary training seek to contextualize the questions of the legal field in broader debates within the social sciences. They also seek to train students in habits of critical thinking that connect the research exercise with discussions on ethics and epistemology in the social sciences.

The subjects of methodological training seek to train students in different methodologies in the legal field, as well as in the theoretical debates about implementing these methods and others exported from the social sciences.

The students select the four elective subjects from those offered by the Master in Law (Non-Research). They seek to connect legal research with practical discussions in the discipline.

Methodology

Course methodology is aligned with Universidad Icesi’s learning philosophy, using active teaching strategies that favor greater participation by students in their own learning process. Therefore, it is each student’s job to prepare for class by reading, analyzing, synthesizing, interpreting, and evaluating program materials. The classes utilize workshops, problems, and cases in order to address course topics. Students have access to national and international databases and to specialized and up-to-date legal literature. They also use the e-learning platform to access the materials of each course and to support the learning process.
