Why a Master of Information Technology and Telecommunications (Research)

Information technology and telecommunications are important factors for competitiveness that strengthen economic and social development of countries and business organizations. It's because of technological innovation and its continuous momentum that we live in an information and knowledge society This calls for the education of new professionals with heightened applied research skills that they leverage as part of strategies that favor innovation in ICT-related areas and fields.

Mindful of this need, Universidad Icesi has designed the Master of Information Technology and Telecommunications (research modality), a graduate program aimed at applied research, that allows researchers to get involved in the productive or research areas of ICTs within organizations, while also offering them the change to continue their doctoral studies in Colombia or abroad.

Why a Master of ICT research?

The Master of ICT research programs are an important aspect of advanced professional training for developing the region’s and/or country's competitiveness and contributing to the creation of cutting-edge knowledge at leading universities in Colombia and around the world. They seek to broaden and build the capacity and skills to solve problems in different fields and represent the first level of academic training in postgraduate studies.

The Master of Information Technology and Telecommunications (MIT) from Universidad Icesi responds southwest Colombia’s need for a high-level, specialized training program that includes international standards of applied research, development and innovation (R+D+i). They are intended to train highly-qualified professionals who are up-to-date with ICT with capabilities and skills that allow them to lead projects that help Colombia's economic and social development through applied research.

Purpose of the program

  • To train high-level researchers capable of solving problems in ICT-related areas that require applied research and innovation, finding solutions by developing new and economically viable ICT products and services.
  • To promote researcher participation in multidisciplinary applied research groups to develop ICT projects with regional companies for finding solutions to problems related to the region and the country.
  • Guide and help researchers, through ties with international research groups, to continue their doctoral studies in Colombia or abroad in the concentrations offered by the master’s program.

The Master of Information Technology and Telecommunications is supported by nationally and internationally recognized research groups and Ph.Ds. with ample national and international research experience in information technology and telecommunications.

The Master of Information Technology and Telecommunications empowers the development of research and innovation skills through a flexible curriculum focused on the development of innovative ICT products, goods and services.

Who is this program for?

Professionals in systems engineering, electronics, telecommunications, telematics or related engineering fields, professionals in basic sciences interested in applied research in the fields of information technology and telecommunications.

Focus Areas

The Master of Information Technology and Telecommunications from Universidad Icesi allows researchers the opportunity to choose one of two concentrations as determined by their research interests. 

Telecommunications

Purpose: To train applied research professionals in advanced communication networks and the development of applications and innovative telematic services for creating and presenting research projects distinguished by their applicability, and their social, business, and governmental benefit.

Students can:

  • Model and evaluate new solutions for communication networks through analytic approximations, validated by simulation technology, and/or emulation and prototype development.
  • Solve problems in telecommunications-related areas through analysis, design, and implementation of advanced wireless communications networks.
  • Analyze, design and develop innovative services and applications on communication network infrastructure and ad hoc (Smart Grid, Smart Cities).

Information Technology

Purpose To train applied research professionals in applied who can contribute to the improvement of the design and development of quality software from the process and the product side, incorporating best practices and innovative techniques. In the product focus, students can incorporate quality attributes in their software products, integrating self-adaptation and self-management properties. 

In the process focus, students can incorporate quality attributes through the reuse of software components and artifacts using software product lines.

Students can:

  • • Build viable solutions to applied research problems related to analysis, design, implementation, maintenance and evolution and self-adaptive software systems.
  • • Use advanced software architecture principles to solve problems related to the development and evolution of large-scale software systems.
  • • Propose alternatives that support improvement in the quality, efficacy and efficiency of processes and products created by software development teams through the adoption and adaptation of best practices.

Length and Methodology

The set length and methodology for the Master of Information Technology and Telecommunications (MIT) is in-person for four semesters (2 years). Students should make sure that they can dedicate at least 20 hours a week to the program. Students are expected to dedicate at least four (4) hours a day to research.

Classes are normally scheduled Fridays from 6:00 to 10:00pm and Saturdays from 8:00am to 12:00pm. During the first semester, students will attend between two (2) and three (3) in-person sessions per week, each four (4) hours, which may be offered from Monday through Friday from 6:00 to 10:00pm and Saturdays from 8:00am to 5:00pm.

Starting in the first semester, students must have a research project that they develop over the course of the four (4) semesters. Students will have the opportunity to take classes related to their area of research at other regional and national universities, as well as work with international research groups.

With 5 colleges, one (1) School of Education Sciences, 26 undergraduate programs, 6 Bachelor's degrees, 22 Master’s programs, 17 Medical-surgical specializations, 11 legal specializations, and 2 engineering specializations approved by the Ministry of National Education and with high-quality accreditation from national and international accrediting bodies. The quality of education and research at Universidad Icesi makes it possible for graduates to have access to and join research groups at universities and at companies with R+D+i departments in Colombia and abroad.

Universidad Icesi’s research capacity

One of the most important programs in Universidad Icesi's research support strategy is the education of excellent researchers through the Colciencias scholarship program for young researchers.

The School of Engineering is committed to the creation and development of excellent research groups with strategic research areas in ICT, and is supported by the i2T research group, recognized as A1 by Colciencias for its high quality in developing ICT products and services. The i2T group was started in early 1999 with the goal of enhancing the various research activities that were being conducted in different departments within the School of Engineering, contributing to knowledge creation and the development of productive capacity in the ICT industry in southwest Colombia.

In the field of telecommunications, the group conducts research in: Interactive digital television, advanced wireless communications, radio software, vehicular networks, smart grid, and the development of telematic applications and services for smart cities and precision agriculture.

In the field of information technology, the group conducts research in: Business architectures, MODELS: Software development based on metamodels. SASAS: Self-adaptive software. SPL: Software product lines. Quality assurance models in software development. Big data.

The region's only applied research program in ICT

This degree from Universidad Icesi is currently the only master’s level postgraduate program in southwest Colombia aimed at building and strengthening applied research skills and capacity in ICT-related areas, supported by innovation strategies. Its flexible curriculum lets students choose elective courses offered as part of other master's programs at Universidad Icesi or other national universities with which we currently have agreements in areas that let students complement and establish their research interests. The program often schedules advanced research seminars on current issues given by international experts

4. Researchers with the highest levels of academic training

This program has a select group of researchers and Ph.Ds. educated at prestigious international universities that are leaders in ICT research. The university’s ICT Department currently has nine (9) professors with doctorates, three (3) professors who are doctoral candidates and four (4) professors with master's degrees, all working exclusively for the department. They have experience in research, teaching, and consulting, and extensive experience in national companies in both the public and private sectors. They also actively participate in national and international research projects through the university's i2T group, recognized A1 by COLCIENCIAS, contributing to the program's strength and quality.
