English

To Protect Expression or Normalize Aggression? The Challenge of Meta’s Policies

Written by: Natalia Escobar Váquiro, Project Director at the Observatory for Women’s Equity

Recently, Mark Zuckerberg announced that Meta would eliminate fact-checkers on Facebook and Instagram and replace them with user-generated «community notes.» While the measure aims to democratize content moderation, the implications for women, LGBTQ+ individuals, and racialized communities are alarming. These new policies, by allowing previously unacceptable expressions, not only ignore existing digital violence but also contribute to its normalization.

We must be clear: digital violence is a real problem with tangible consequences. At the Observatorio para la Equidad de las Mujeres, we have identified that 53% of working women and businesswomen in Colombia have been victims of crimes such as cyberbullying, identity theft, or the non-consensual dissemination of intimate images. These attacks are not mere virtual conflicts; they generate anxiety, post-traumatic stress, and profoundly affect the economic autonomy and professional reputation of victims.

By relaxing moderation and relying on community systems, Meta risks amplifying hate speech and perpetuating structural inequalities. This disproportionately impacts women, who already face high levels of hostility when addressing gender issues or attempting to position themselves in politics.

Meta frames these changes under the argument of protecting freedom of expression, but this narrative neglects how certain discourses undermine the dignity of historically discriminated groups. Tolerating language that objectifies women or perpetuates stereotypical roles dehumanizes them and limits their full participation in digital spaces that should be inclusive and safe.

Additionally, transferring the responsibility for moderation to users amplifies existing biases, leaving women and diverse communities exposed. This is particularly problematic on platforms where women leading social or feminist causes are frequent targets of smear campaigns and mass harassment.

Although these changes represent a challenge, we are not alone. It is time to act collectively and strategically to protect ourselves and demand real transformation. Here are some ideas:

Create Support Networks: Sharing experiences and solutions strengthens our resilience to harassment and amplifies our voices.

Take Proactive Measures: Reporting online aggressions collectively generates visibility and pressure for platforms and institutions to act.

Demand Structural Changes: Participating in campaigns that promote clear regulations and hold platforms accountable is crucial for building safer digital environments.

The great challenge is to protect inclusive digital spaces, as Meta’s decisions reflect a lack of commitment to the safety and well-being of its users. We cannot accept that digital violence is normalized in the name of freedom of expression. Now more than ever, it is essential to unite, raise our voices, and work for a future where everyone can navigate the internet with dignity and security. This fight is not just for us; it is for the generations to come.

Escrito por: Natalia Escobar Váquiro

[85

post-8559","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-boletines-de-prensa
["GET
