Icesi University has successfully expanded its presence into the new areas of knowledge that coincide with the disciplines of the future, as well as with the sustainability for the region, the country and the world. After reflecting on the great potential that new knowledge areas will have for the social and economic development of Cali and Valle del Cauca, in the middle of 2008, Icesi University opened the Faculty of Natural Sciences (FCN) with programs in biology, chemistry and pharmaceutical chemistry; these programs were created with the objective of educating professionals with a solid foundation in technical and scientific research and its application in the technological and industrial development of the region.
Scientific knowledge is acquired through the study and practice of the scientific method, which makes use of observation as well as rational and systematic experimentation, to acquire quantifiable evidence.
The strategy of the Faculty is to strengthen the previously mentioned processes by educating professionals with a solid foundation, high competitive drive, interdisciplinary perspective and applied research focus; they will also have strong skills in communication, multidisciplinary teamwork, scientific management and business creativity. With a well-rounded perspective, graduates will be able to face the problems that exist in today’s world.
Students of the Faculty of Natural Sciences enhance their education with other areas of knowledge, so as to be able to integrate science with economic and developmental policies aimed at promoting an environmentally sustainable society.
Our Faculty conducts basic and applied research in the areas of biology, chemistry and pharmaceutical chemistry. It focuses on issues such as biodiversity and the new frontiers of modern biology (from a chemistry point of view) and it directs its attention towards the chemical and food industry, as well as environmental impact. Our approach to modern pharmacology, biochemistry and cellular physiology (applied in neuroscience together with that of industrial drug production), allows us to address factors that are applied to therapeutic innovation and the health sector.

Ph.D. Cellular and Molecular Physiology
Head of the Department of Biological Sciences
The Department of Biological Sciences began working in conjunction with chemistry in March 2008 and has operated independently since January 2011. Currently, it has 25 professors, ten of whom are full-time. The department is responsible for more than 30 courses and 13 laboratory courses for the programs of Biology, Chemistry, Pharmaceutical Chemistry, Medicine, Biochemical Engineering and the Education Degree in Natural Sciences. It also offers elective courses in natural sciences to the rest of the university.
Among its academic functions are: structuring courses and laboratory courses, finding and assigning suitable professors and ensuring teaching quality in accordance with the educational model of Universidad Icesi. Additionally, full-time professors of the department manage research projects internally and in collaboration with researchers from other departments of the university, other universities, government entities and non-governmental organizations.

The department of chemical sciences has been in operation since January of 2011. It currently has eight full-time professors and 40 professors in total. The department is responsible for 30 courses and 20 laboratory courses which are offered to the programs of biology, chemistry,pharmaceutical chemistry, medicine and industrial engineering
The academic functions of the department are: to structure courses and laboratory courses, to find and to assign suitable professors for courses and to ensure the quality of teaching according to the educational model of the University. Full-time professors are responsible for collaborative research projects, both internally and externally, with researchers from other Icesi departments, universities and industry.
Phd. in Chemical Sciences
Head of the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences
This department is made up of a team of professors with extensive experience in different areas related to the pharmaceutical field such as healthcare and clinical pharmacy, pharmaceutical physicochemistry and drug discovery in preclinical stages, among others. Currently, the department is composed of 24 professors of whom eight are full-time. Likewise, the department is responsible for more than 20 courses and 10 laboratory courses.
The surprising and exciting world of pharmaceutical sciences represents a range of possibilities without limits and regional and national development plans are in tune with this. Therefore, the department will continue to train Pharmaceutical Chemists with solid ethical criteria, who can project themselves professionally in a society in which they are recognized for their high standards of academic and research quality.
The research group Natura, categorized by Colciencias as A1 due to its trajectory and publications of impact, is led by Professor Thaura Ghneim Herrera, a full-time professor in the Department of Biological Sciences, and is made up of professors and researchers assigned to the Faculty of Natural Sciences.
Objectives
Natura's research objectives are multidisciplinary and integrate various areas of knowledge in biological, chemical and pharmaceutical sciences for innovation and technological application in the environmental, agricultural, industrial and health sectors. The main focus is to develop strategic research topics of comparative advantage with the local and national scientific environment; be selective in the choice of feasible research topics that offer tangible products in the medium term; actively promote opportunities of technological transfer to the productive sector; and provide education to various sectors of society on environmental issues and technological innovation.
The group has several research lines led by professors from the academic departments of Biological Sciences, Chemical Sciences and Pharmaceutical Sciences. Some research projects attached to these lines have a multidisciplinary nature and are developed in conjunction with other areas of the university, such as the Center for Social Protection and Health Economics Studies (PROESA), and the Faculties of Health Sciences, Engineering, Law and Social Sciences, and Administrative and Economic Sciences.

Egresado de los programas de Química Farmacéutica y Química, con énfasis en Bioquímica (2016)
El Comité Institucional de Ética, Bioética y Bioseguridad de la Universidad Icesi (CEBio), tiene como misión velar por el cumplimiento de las regulaciones nacionales vigentes en cuanto al acceso y uso de la biodiversidad, así como velar por el cumplimiento de las normas vigentes sobre ética, bioética y bioseguridad en la investigación, y actuar como contacto entre la Universidad y las autoridades reguladoras gubernamentales.
Entre las funciones del CEBio se encuentran:
• Evaluar los aspectos éticos, bioéticos y de bioseguridad de los proyectos de investigación con organismos vivos a desarrollarse en la Universidad Icesi, incluidos los aspectos específicos relacionados con el desarrollo y manipulación de los organismos vivos modificados (OVM), y velar por el seguimiento de los mismos.
• Velar por el cumplimiento de las regulaciones nacionales en cuanto al acceso y uso de la biodiversidad para la investigación en la Universidad asociada a cualquier grupo biológico: plantas, hongos, animales o microorganismos. Es decir, pensar en el conjunto de criterios que garanticen la prevención de posible daños en los procesos de investigación científica y que garanticen el uso adecuado de los organismos vivos estudiados y la preservación del ambiente; para esto el CEBio actúa como contacto central entre la Universidad y las autoridades reguladoras (ej., ICA, Ministerio del Ambiente, INVIMA), con el fin que las normativas legales vigentes sean aplicadas.
La Universidad Icesi, cumpliendo las leyes nacionales y siguiendo los principios de sensibilidad, responsabilidad y cumplimiento de las 3Rs (reemplazo, reducción y refinamiento) conformó mediante la Resolución de Rectoría No. 847 de Julio de 2012 el Comité Institucional de Ética para el Cuidado y Uso de Animales en Experimentación (CIECUAE), cuyas funciones son:
• Velar por el respeto a los derechos y el bienestar de los animales que participan en las investigaciones, permitiendo al mismo tiempo el adecuado desarrollo del proceso de investigación, formación y prestación de servicios de la Institución.
• Proveer una revisión independiente, competente y oportuna de los proyectos de investigación que se desarrollen en La Universidad Icesi e involucren experimentación en animales, con el fin de garantizar que estos se acogen a las normas y requerimientos éticos establecidos a nivel nacional e internacional.
Los miembros del CIECUAE guían su trabajo de revisión de protocolos de experimentación en animales con la normativa legal nacional consignada en: la Ley 84 de 1989 de la República de Colombia por la cual se adopta el Estatuto Nacional de Protección de los Animales y la Resolución No. 008430 de 1993 del Ministerio de Salud de Colombia, específicamente el Título V referente a la investigación biomédica en animales. También se siguen los “Principios Guía Internacionales para la Investigación Biomédica que Involucra Animales – CIOMS e ICLAS” y la “Guía para el Cuidado y Uso de Animales de Laboratorio – Consejo Nacional de Investigación (NRC) de USA.
La aplicación de estos lineamientos nos ayuda a asegurar el respeto por los derechos de los animales y el cumplimiento de procedimientos orientados a asegurar su bienestar en las investigaciones que involucran experimentación en animales en la Universidad Icesi.
Conformación del CIECUAE
El CIECUAE está conformado por al menos 8 miembros, 7 con voz y voto y 1 sin voto (secretario/a).
Los miembros vocales son: Un miembro representante del Instituto Colombiano Agropecuario (ICA), un miembro representante de la entidad ambiental municipal (DAGMA) y un miembro representante de una sociedad protectora de animales, de acuerdo a la ley 84 de 1989. Cuatro miembros que deben ser personas profesionales de reconocida buena reputación, quienes hayan demostrado una conducta ejemplar de ética profesional y comunitaria. De acuerdo a la regulación del Instituto Nacional de Salud (NIH) de USA al menos uno de los miembros debe ser un médico veterinario y otro un científico con experiencia comprobada en experimentación en animales.
Miembro no vocal: Secretario/a del Comité, Ana Milena Folleco Fontal, Medico Veterinaria Zootecnista, Facultad Ciencias Naturales de la Universidad Icesi.
Requisitos para someter un proyecto de investigación a revisión por el CIECUAE
1. Carta de presentación dirigida al presidente(a) del CIECUAE: Juliana Rengifo Gómez Ph.D., Profesora del Departamento de Ciencias Biológicas de la Universidad Icesi.
2. Protocolo de investigación explicando detalladamente los procedimientos que involucren los animales y la descripción de las medidas tomadas para evitar el dolor, sufrimiento y maltrato de los animales.
