Specialty in Orthopedics and Traumatology

Why study a Specialty in Orthopedics and Traumatology?

The Specialty in Orthopedics and Traumatology, despite being a relatively recent program, is one of the areas of medicine that is acquiring greater importance each day. This is due to the confluence of several factors: the high frequency of musculo-skeletal trauma; the change in the population pyramid that makes degenerative diseases increasingly prevalent; and the increase in sport related trauma. The greater importance of this field is also attributable to the development of new technologies to solve these problems, such as molecular biology, nano technology, implant development and surgical techniques.

All of the above makes orthopedics and traumatology a fascinating specialty, and one whose end goal is to help improve the quality of life of patients and get them to return to the activities they had before the disease. The importance of this specialty is such that the first decade of the 21st century was named as the decade of osteo-articular disease, due to its impact on world health.

Universidad Icesi’s Specialty in Orthopedics and Traumatology has its practice centre at the Fundación Valle del Lili clinic, an institution with a high quality accreditation in health and recognized as a university hospital. The institution has a Department of Orthopedics and Traumatology organized by sub specialties, each of which offers state of the art patient care. In addition, the departments of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, Rheumatology and Infectology and the clinical research centre, offer support for joint clinical and academic activities.

Icesi and the Fundación Valle del Lili

The Fundación Valle del Lili and Universidad Icesi have become allies through an agreement that has been called: a deep alliance for life. With this agreement the region is strengthened by the union of two well reputed institutions, which will now work together for the well-being and the health of people and for maintaining a leadership position thanks to their constant advances in the academic, social, humanistic and scientific fields. The Fundación Valle del Lili is the university hospital with the best conditions, both in terms of infrastructure, human resources and technology, and it will provide clinical training and medical practice to future students. This alliance allows both institutions to establish a synergy in all their activities, through coordination for work, preservation of excellence in performance, already widely recognized in both institutions, and consolidates the social projection of both institutions in one of the most important sectors for the community - health. For both institutions this agreement is a strategic step. Scholarship support to resident doctors is an internal process of the Fundación Valle del Lili, whose process will be informed in a timely manner to those who are admitted.
