Why study a Specialization in Internal Medicine?

The demand for “general” Internal Medicine Specialists has grown, given he or she is the specialist that follows in the complexity scale for adult care, after the general doctor, logical structure and practice which should follow the EPS in the context of law 100. The extensive training and practice for internal medicine specialists in these environments are completed by specialists that largely generate the solution for adult diseases which are a real public health problem. The internal medicine specialist is a specialist who is able to solve most medical situations in the adult and also handle many complications in surgical patients. Currently, Colombia has a significant deficit of internal medicine specialists which guarantees a future job market. Chronic diseases in adults show a growing prevalence and handling said diseases requires a comprehensive specialist such as the internal medicine specialist.

Candidate Profile

The aspiring internal medicine specialists should be an inquisitive and insightful doctor. He or she should always go beyond, research everything, integrate, and be clever. He or she should not like to assume, but rather to prove, for whom research should be one of the greatest likings. He or she should be patient but non-conformist to knowledge, and should understand the patient in all his or her personal, familiar, and personal context. Responsibility and dedication should be his or her greatest virtues.

Graduate profile

The graduate of the Specialization in Internal Medicine program will have the skills to: Comprehensively handle patients with nonsurgical diseases, both inpatient and outpatient (patient care) Ethically perform, respecting patient independence and dignity (professionalism) Communicate, support, address the patient, patient’s family, and the medical and paramedic teams Perform his or her medical tasks pursuant to the guidelines and regulations of the Colombian health system Conduct clinic-epidemiological research

Institutional Accreditation

In the Resolution, the Ministry states: "It has been shown that Universidad Icesi has achieved sufficient quality levels so that, in accordance with the norms that govern the matter, this fact is publicly recognized through a formal act of institutional accreditation". We are the first private university in southwestern Colombia to obtain the highest recognition of quality provided by the Colombian Government. This is a recognition of the quality of the academic programs, their operation and the fulfillment of the social function of the university. Universidad Icesi was accredited in May 2010 by the Ministry of Education through the National Accreditation Committee (CNA), making it the first accredited private university in Cali and the region. In the Resolution, the Ministry states: "It has been demonstrated that Universidad Icesi has achieved sufficient quality levels so that, in accordance with the rules that govern the matter, this fact is publicly recognized through a formal act of institutional accreditation".

The Fundación Valle del Lili and Universidad Icesi have become allies through an agreement that has been called: a deep alliance for life. With this agreement the region is strengthened by the union of two well reputed institutions, which will now work together for the well-being and the health of people and for maintaining a leadership position thanks to their constant advances in the academic, social, humanistic and scientific fields. The Fundación Valle del Lili is the university hospital with the best conditions, both in terms of infrastructure, human resources and technology, and it will provide clinical training and medical practice to future students. This alliance allows both institutions to establish a synergy in all their activities, through coordination for work, preservation of excellence in performance, already widely recognized in both institutions, and consolidates the social projection of both institutions in one of the most important sectors for the community - health. For both institutions this agreement is a strategic step. Scholarship support to resident doctors is an internal process of the Fundación Valle del Lili, whose process will be informed in a timely manner to those who are admitted.

Duration and schedule

Objective

To train ideal professionals with great ethical values, for handling medical pathologies in the adult.

Methodology

The Internal Medicine Specialization is exclusive commitment and full time, and requires the development of a schedule during training which includes theoretical-practical activities with permanent supervision from professors. The theoretical study is based on seminars, topic reviews, case reviews, and review clubs, among others.

The practical component is completed basically in conjunction with the student’s professors, in the outpatient clinic, and in inpatient hospital rooms, the emergency room, and intensive care. Additionally, skills are acquired for practicing procedures appropriate to the specialization.

Duration

The program has a duration of 3 years with exclusive full time commitment.

Degree granted

Universidad Icesi confers the degree of Specialist in Internal Medicine to all who satisfactorily complete all the program requirements.
